Izamal Mothers in Motion

In Izamal, Mexico, in Yucatán state, women ride with their children on bicycles in hand-made bike seats of wood, or with older children balanced on their bike frames. It’s not uncommon to see two or or more people on a bike, on their way to school, work, or the market. Traveling with my own toddler daughter and looking for a way to be mobile in town, I realized these women had solved the problem for me. Their ubiquitous presence in the city of 15,000 became an inspiration. The independence and freedom I felt once I discovered this method of transport and got a bike and seat of our own, elevated these women to a heroic status in my mind. In their faces I saw the Mayan women workers in the paintings of the Mexican muralists. The yellow walls inside the city reflected light and provided a natural studio. I made these portraits in tribute to the ingenuity of these mothers and the touching, physical bonds they share with their young children as they go about their days. I am reminded of them every time I carry my children in their wooden bike seat around our neighborhood in Dallas, Texas.
